What’s a Country at the Top of Your Bucket List?
The answer to this question for us is simple: Uganda.
Yes, Lapatutu Writing Creations is based right here in Uganda, and normally, when people name a bucket list destination, they point to somewhere three flights away. But hear us out.
Long before social media influencers existed, Winston Churchill—who would later become one of Britain’s most famous Prime Ministers—visited in 1907 and called Uganda, “The Pearl of Africa” in his book My African Journey. He gave Uganda that title for its sheer variety—remarking on its unique mix of climate, scale, and profusion of life that set it apart from anywhere else on the continent.
There is a distinct authenticity when such praise comes from a well-traveled outsider; it proves that the beauty here isn’t just local bias, but something universally striking. More than a century later, that description still holds up.
Beyond the famous title, there is still so much about this land that we as well have yet to fully explore. Take Murchison Falls, for instance. Watching the Nile force its way through a narrow seven-meter gap is almost unimaginable. A view like that offers a writer enough inspiration to last them quite a while.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and the featured image of Murchison Falls by Jonathan Göhner on Unsplash is clear evidence of this. Rocks, water, lush greenery—everything working in perfect, simultaneous harmony. This is one beautiful country!
Away from the waters and the green, there are the many animals that have called this land home for generations. One that carries a quiet dignity is the Uganda Kob. It is an animal so majestic that it features proudly on our national coat of arms. And almost everywhere you turn in Uganda’s savannas, you will find this kob standing tall.

And within the very same land as the kob stands the mighty lion. Right there on the same savanna, you get to witness the striking contradiction of nature’s food chain—where prey and predator walk the exact same ground.
We could go on and on, but all of this is still only a fraction of what Uganda has to offer. As writers, there is an unspoken connection with the world around us—it is as if nature itself provides the raw energy for our craft. That is what makes this bucket list choice deeply personal for us.
Sometimes the most compelling stories and memories aren’t hidden on another continent—they are waiting right outside your front door if you take the time to look closely.
Have a thoughtful week!
