Newman's staff member warmly attending to a customer at a trade fair display

A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption of our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider of our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favor by serving him. He is doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to do so. — Mahatma Gandhi

The words remind us of a simple truth: business is really about human connection, not just swapping money for a product or service. For any brand, these words serve as a clear compass for how to treat the people who choose to support us day after day, and at Newman’s, this philosophy is how they have purposed to show up every single day.

The customer is an important visitor.

In many homes, when an important visitor is coming over, you determine as a family that you are to be on your best behavior that day. The idea was to ensure that the important visitor felt welcome, such that they hopefully return another day. For a business, this day of the important visitor is everyday. Newman’s lives this out by making sure every customer interaction feels like an honored guest walking into a home.

He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him.

For a business, this means one thing. The customer can exist without your business, but your business cannot exist without your customer. For a company like Newman’s, it is the understanding that a customer can go a day without snacking, they can even completely forget that you exist. And this is why it is critical to continuously avail yourself to them: answering their questions, listening to their feedback, and committing to continuous quality.

He is not an interruption of our work. He is the purpose of it.

Indeed, a customer must be the reason we put down the phone, pause the TikTok scrolling, and stop the conversation on whether Man City will win the league again without Pep Guardiola—giving them our full, undivided attention the moment they arrive. In that moment, the customer is the most important person and all else can wait, for as Gandhi stated, they are not an interruption of our work, they are the reason we are open!

We are not doing him a favor by serving him. He is doing us a favor by giving us the opportunity to do so.

Understanding this solves a critical problem of humility. A business ought to be confident in its products and process, yet deeply humble toward the customer. After all, the customer is taking their hard-earned money and handing it to Newman’s in exchange for a snack.

This point of humility is reflected in how consistently Newman’s shows up where the people are, actively participating in events like the International Trade Fair and various expos just to be present with their customers.

For Newman’s, true care lives in the details of listening. It means answering questions with patience, paying attention to feedback, and receiving every comment as a gift rather than a complaint.

Newman’s continues to demonstrate this deep respect for the customer in everything they do. Whether you visit their authorized retail partners or drop by their exhibition stall during trade fairs, you will feel that same commitment to customer honor.

Lapatutu Reflections

Writers are not necessarily great speakers, but great speakers are almost certainly great writers. The ability to speak elegantly is deeply tied to your ability to write the thoughts in your mind. What an honorable thing writing is!
