The year was 2013.

A visionary company was exporting Ugandan vegetables to Europe—a business that anyone in the export industry will tell you requires rigorous standards to get food approved for international markets.

Because of the immense distances farmers had to travel to deliver their produce, the delicate crops were often damaged along the bumpy roads. One such casualty was hot pepper (kamulali).

Witnessing this heartbreaking loss for local farmers, the company made a definitive choice: they would add value to Ugandan food produce right here at home. That singular spark ignited the very first product of Newman Foods Limited (the home of Newman’s): the iconic UG Kamulali.

When they saw waste, it pushed them to take action.

Today, Newman’s has grown into a premium snack provider in Uganda, driven by a powerful vision: to transform Ugandan Agricultural Abundance into Global Excellence. You can taste this commitment to quality in the way they elevate everyday ingredients into amazing culinary experiences.

Worthy to note is the Masala G. Nuts. They took the ordinary groundnut and elevated it into an outstanding work of art. We shall not get started on the flavored hard corn, or should we? Newman’s found a way to elevate the hard corn to create what we called, Amawogola Semawogola!

It is against this backdrop of innovation and purpose that we are honored to announce Newman’s as our official partner for the Lapatutu Letter Writing Competition at Nakiwogo Primary School!

When we received the nod from the Newman’s team to work together, we were instantly reminded of their origin story.

The Lapatutu letter-writing competition challenges students to tackle the issue of waste disposal head-on. As they put pen to paper, the students are tasked with writing a letter to a friend who always litters the school compound, offering them a practical solution on what to do with their waste instead. The crisis of littering always starts with the irresponsibility of a single person dropping waste where it doesn’t belong.

For Newman’s, stepping into this initiative is responsibility in action.

Newman’s manufactures their products with a specific kind of consumer in mind: someone who loves to enjoy a premium snack and just as passionately ensures the packaging is responsibly disposed of afterward. This is exactly why they diligently print a reminder on every single pack urging us to keep our environment clean.

To make this commitment tangible, Newman’s is joining hands with Lapatutu Writing Creations to provide school bags and pens for the top writers. The hope is that this investment in young minds will cultivate a generation of Ugandans who champion environmental stewardship.

Once again, they are seeing a problem of waste, and they are taking action.

Right now, the eager students at Nakiwogo Primary School are busy putting pen to paper. The competition will close on 17th July 2026, and shortly after, our top writers will be crowned at a grand school assembly.

Thank you, Newman’s, for believing in the power of words, the potential of our young learners, and ultimately, the future of a cleaner nation.

Quote of the month

“When the radio came, they said writing was over. When the TV came, they said writing was done. Now the internet and AI are here, and they say the same thing. But writing—human writing—has stood firm as the bedrock upon which all communication is built.
